Directed by Paul Baker
The Exception and the Rule is a Lehrstück (i.e. “learning play”) by Bertolt Brecht (translated by Ralph Mannheim). A hugely influential playwright, Brecht believed theater had a duty to educate as well as to entertain. Written around 1929, Exception confronts a deplorable aspect of black-white relations, all too familiar to us nearly 90 years later.
