Calumny
Two short vintage comedies about slander, libel & fake news
Friday, January 8, at 8:00 p.m
Please join the online party for the streaming of our pre-recorded performance on YouTube! We present two one-act gems exploring the transmission of lies and the significance — or insignificance? — of truth.
The performance will take place from 8:00 to 9:15pm on the Players’ YouTube channel. There will be an optional post-show discussion via Zoom, to which interested audience members will be directed at the end of the show.
For anyone who cares to arrive early, there will be a slideshow running from 7:30 until the show starts. Vintage photos, drawings and music will transport you back to the eras in which our plays are set: Britain’s Naughty ‘Nineties, and America during the First World War.
The Stepmother
by the Briton Arnold Bennett, is a diverting romp from the turn of the 20th century, concerning the literary life and the use of the pen as a weapon.
He Said & She Said
by Alice Gerstenberg, is set in America during the first world war. The author of Overtones crafted an ingenious demonstration of how to gaslight people with gossip.
