Everybody is a modern adaptation of the 15th century play Everyman. Both versions follow a character that represents Everybody, who is being called forth by Death to face judgment before God. Everybody doesn’t want to face Death alone, so they try to bring along their Friends, Kin, Cousin, and Stuff, and even their Strength, Beauty, Mind, and Senses, only to be turned away with every attempt. Ultimately, they learn that the only thing that follows you after Death are the deeds you did when you were living, whether through Love or Evil.
Everybody approaches this story with a more sarcastic, modern sense of humor. The show never fully decides on a set moral, instead letting the audience explore the question of “what is a life well lived?” Everybody is more self-aware than the original: it sets itself in a theater, and most of the characters come from the audience. The most striking change, however, is the decision to have Everybody played by a different actor in the cast every night, randomly selected via lottery. With 5 actors out of the cast getting 1 of 5 different roles every night, this creates about 125 possible shows for the audiences to see, making each performance a truly unique experience.
