The Marriage of Bette and Boo: Auditions

January 21, 2017 Leave a Comment

And we’re off!  Auditions are always difficult for everyone.  I know the actors are worried about impressing the director, but I’m just as freaked out about making sure they have a good experience.  For many people, this is their first impression of us, the Hyde Park Community Players, so I try my best to present myself as a fun, together and knowledgeable director, and I think some of the newbies are convinced.  This time auditions went swimmingly.  I had the additional diversion of watching several actors’ bacon interpretations throughout the long evenings.  I learned a lot about how to interpret bacon, which was frankly a topic I had put close to zero thought or energy into before.  Who knew bacon could be sexual?  Or emotional?  I had never considered bacon’s range before, lol.  One actor commented, “I eat a ton of bacon, but I never realized I was studying for a role when I was frying it.  I should have paid better attention.”  Lesson to be learned: always pay attention to everything.  You never know when you’ll have to impersonate bacon to win a role.

I listen to my gut.  Sometimes I sleep on it to see if my gut is still the same the next morning, and it always is.  It never steers me wrong, and for this production, in spite of some crazy schedule complications, my gut told me to do this for casting: (Note: After I wrote everything below, I realized that my gut has a lot of thoughts and maybe rambles a little.)
