BLACK LIVES MATTER.

April 21, 2021 Leave a Comment

Hello all! We hope everyone is as safe and healthy as possible in these challenging times. We miss you, and our hearts are with you.

With live performances on hold, we have been seizing this unique moment to examine ourselves hyper-critically and reaffirm ourselves as an inclusive, diverse, and actively anti-racist organization. It is important that we not only live these values, but celebrate them.

Here are some of the steps we are taking in the short and long term:

  1. Examining and reflecting on the mistakes our organization has made in the past, and the ways we have unintentionally failed and/or harmed our members of color through play selection, casting choices, gate keeping, general lack of support, etc.
  2. Striving for increased diversity on and off the stage, with special focus on directing and other leadership positions, by actively pursuing initiatives to recruit, foster, develop, and support talent within the organization.
  3. Exploring and featuring more playwrights of color in various ways (e.g. main stage shows, monthly reading series, website spotlights, etc.).
  4. Increasing our community involvement, including volunteering/fundraising for worthy justice-oriented causes, attending educational opportunities, offering openly accessible workshops for theater related topics, featuring local playwrights/poets/artists in the work we showcase, etc.

As a community-based organization, there will be ongoing conversations around these topics, so please stay tuned for opportunities to get involved.

Black lives matter. Black stories matter. Black art matters. Let’s continue this fight in whatever way we can.
