Join us as we share one of the lesser known works of the beloved author of The Lord of the Rings. In this short play for two voices, Tolkien blends his strengths as an imaginative writer with his knowledge as a preeminent scholar of Anglo-Saxon literature. The Homecoming dramatizes Tolkien’s musings on the waning of the warrior tradition that we see in poems like Beowulf. The play follows on the action found in a fragment of late Anglo-Saxon poetry, The Battle of Maldon, which records a disastrous battle in the long struggle of the native English against repeated invasions of Viking marauders seeking plunder.
After the performance, there will be homemade treats and a chance to talk about the reading. $5 at the door.
