Propose a Show for 2018-2019

December 23, 2017 1 Comment

Proposal Form for 2018-2019

To propose a show for 2018-2019, please fill out and submit our Proposal Form. The deadline for proposals is April 1, 2018.

An HPCP season consists of at least two full productions plus the Halloween radio show, an outdoor summer Shakespeare play, and our Friday Staged Readings series. Use the proposal form to propose to direct a full production, the Halloween radio show, or the outdoor Shakespeare play. (To propose a staged reading, please visit the Friday Staged Readings page.)

How many full productions we do in a given season is determined by the play selection committee. The play selection committee includes the Board of Directors and is open to interested active members. Committee members must commit to reading some of the proposed plays in advance, to communicating with other members online, and to attending one pretty heavy-duty meeting.

When you propose a show for a full production, you are offering to direct it. If you intend for someone else to direct it, you must indicate who that person is, and explain why you are not directing it yourself. We are always looking for new directors. We recommend that if you will be directing for the first time, you bring an experienced HPCP director into the production team (usually as producer or assistant director). Directing a staged reading is also a way to prepare for directing a full production.

Before proposing your show, find out whether the performance rights are available and how much they will cost. For shows that are not in the public domain, we need to obtain the performance rights from whichever company owns them; and some shows are more expensive than others. If you don’t know how to find out about your show’s performance rights, feel free to contact us and someone will be in touch to help you get started. (Shakespeare is in the public domain and so are most vintage radio plays.)

Directing an HPCP show is challenging, and requires a major commitment of time and energy. It is also uniquely rewarding. If you have questions about the proposal process or about the directing process, please contact us and someone will respond as soon as possible. We look forward to reading your proposals!

I would like to advance a frivolous proposal on the topic of current politics.
(Though someone could always make it unfrivolous). Someone should write
a play in which Franklin Delano Roosevelt is raised from the dead, heals all
divisions, and saves the United States of America.

Though I would love to see this play, I am not currently prepared to write it.
That is why my proposal is frivolous.

Congratulations on the new Proposals Page! I will be back later with
    something serious.
